Amaltari Tharu homestay
A Tharu village on Chitwan's western edge with community homestays, rhinos by the river and far fewer tourists than Sauraha.
Amaltari lies on the Narayani in the buffer zone of Chitwan National Park, on the Nawalpur side. Its Tharu families run a well-organised community homestay, serving traditional food in painted mud-walled houses and performing stick and peacock dances.
Guided jungle walks, jeep safaris into western Chitwan and birdwatching on the river are arranged locally, and rhinos regularly graze near the village. It is one of the best examples of community-based tourism in the Terai.
