Jaleshwar Mahadev
An ancient Shiva shrine whose linga sits below water level in a sunken sanctum, giving the town its name.
Jaleshwar means 'lord in the water'. In the temple at the centre of the town, the Shiva linga lies in a pit several metres below the ground, usually surrounded by water. The site is counted among the important Shiva shrines of the Mithila region and is part of the Janakpur Parikrama tradition.
The temple has large ponds on either side and is especially crowded at Shivaratri and on Mondays in Shrawan. Jaleshwar is right on the Indian border, a short drive from Janakpur.
