The flower garden of Raja Salhesh, folk hero of the Dalit communities of Mithila, where a tree is said to bloom only at his festival.
Raja Salhesh is a legendary king and hero of Mithila folk epics, especially honoured by the Dusadh and other Dalit communities. At Mahisarha in Siraha lies the garden linked with his story, where a sacred tree is believed to flower only around the time of the Salhesh festival in spring.
A large fair gathers here each year with performances of the Salhesh epic in song. It is a rare chance to see living folk traditions of the Terai that most guidebooks ignore.
