Simraungadh

Simraungadh was the capital of the Karnat (Karnataka) dynasty, founded by Nanyadeva around 1097, which ruled Mithila until the city was sacked by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq in the 1320s. After its fall, members of the royal family and their priests fled to the Kathmandu Valley, and the goddess Taleju is said to have come with them.

Today the ruins of fort walls, gateways, ponds and broken sculptures lie among villages and fields. Excavations continue, and the Kankali temple and the Ranivas pond are local landmarks. It is one of the most under-visited historical sites in Nepal.
