A goddess temple at Bariyarpur whose great fair every five years draws millions of devotees from Nepal and India.
Gadhimai is a goddess of power worshipped at Bariyarpur in Bara district. Her fair, held every five years in the month of Mangsir, is one of the largest religious gatherings in South Asia.
The fair has been internationally known for mass animal sacrifice, which has been increasingly opposed by animal welfare groups and restricted by court orders; recent fairs have seen far fewer sacrifices. Outside fair years the temple is a quiet village shrine among fields.
