Timbung Pokhari
A sacred high-altitude lake near the Sikkim border, walked to by Limbu pilgrims for the Janai Purnima full moon.
Timbung Pokhari lies at about 4,480 m on the ridge that divides Taplejung from Sikkim. It is a place of pilgrimage for the Limbu, who come in their thousands at the August full moon, bathing in the icy water and camping on the shores.
Outside the festival it is almost deserted: a quiet trek of several days through forest and yak pasture, with the Kanchenjunga range rising behind. You need to be self-sufficient with a tent and food, and a local guide is strongly advised.
