Koshi Province

The far east: Kanchenjunga and Makalu, Everest's Khumbu, the tea gardens of Ilam and the rice plains of Jhapa and Morang.

Koshi Province takes its name from the Sapta Koshi, the great river formed where seven Himalayan rivers join before breaking out onto the plains near Chatara. Three of the world's five highest mountains stand on its northern edge — Everest, Kanchenjunga and Makalu — along with Lhotse and Cho Oyu.

Below the snow lie the green hills of the Limbu and Rai homelands: Ilam's tea estates, the rhododendron forests of Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale, and old bazaar towns such as Dhankuta, Bhojpur and Chainpur. In the south, Biratnagar, Itahari and Dharan form Nepal's busiest industrial belt, and the Koshi Tappu wetlands shelter the last wild water buffalo (arna) in the country.
