Amargadhi, the headquarters of Dadeldhura, takes its name from the fort built by Amar Singh Thapa during Nepal's westward expansion in the late 18th century. The town sits on a ridge among pine forest with a cool climate.
The Ugratara temple near the town is one of the most revered goddess shrines in the far west, with a big fair in Chaitra. Dadeldhura is also known for its deuda songs and the hospitality of its hill villages.
