Gaurishankar
A twin-summited sacred mountain seen from Kathmandu, representing Shiva and his consort Gauri.
Gaurishankar (7,134 m) is visible from the Kathmandu Valley on clear days, and for a long time in the 19th century it was confused by Europeans with Everest. Its two summits are identified with Shiva (Shankar) and Gauri, and the Sherpa call it Jomo Tseringma.
It was one of the last major Himalayan peaks to be climbed (1979). The surrounding Gaurishankar Conservation Area protects the Rolwaling valley, Tsho Rolpa and remote villages that see few visitors.
