Ghodaghodi Lake

A Ramsar-listed complex of forest lakes on the East–West Highway, rich in birds, turtles and lotus.
Ghodaghodi is the largest of a network of oxbow lakes and marshes in the forest of eastern Kailali, listed as a Ramsar wetland in 2003. Lotus and water lilies cover much of the water in summer, and it is important for migratory birds, freshwater turtles and mugger crocodiles.
The lake is sacred to the Tharu people, with a temple of Ghodaghodi Mai on its shore, and a big fair at Maghi. Community groups run boat trips and homestays.
