Ramagrama Stupa

An unexcavated brick mound believed to be the only original stupa still holding relics of the Buddha.
After the Buddha's death his relics were divided among eight kingdoms, and the Koliyas of Ramagrama built a stupa over their share. Legend says Emperor Ashoka opened the other seven stupas to redistribute the relics, but left Ramagrama alone because it was guarded by nagas (serpent spirits).
Today it is a grassy mound about 7 m high on the bank of the Jharahi river, venerated by pilgrims from across Asia. It is on UNESCO's tentative list and lies about an hour's drive east of Lumbini.
