This national park protects the watershed that supplies much of Kathmandu's water. Its oak and rhododendron forest is home to leopards, barking deer, and hundreds of bird and butterfly species — all within an hour of the city.
Popular walks include Shivapuri peak (2,732 m) from Budhanilkantha, the nunnery of Nagi Gompa, Baghdwar (source of the Bagmati), and Jamacho stupa on Nagarjun hill to the west. On clear winter mornings the Himalaya stretches along the northern horizon.
