Namche Bazaar
The Sherpa capital of the Khumbu: a horseshoe of lodges, bakeries and gear shops on a steep slope at 3,440 m.
Namche grew from a small trading village into the hub of the Everest region. Its Saturday market still draws traders who carry goods up from the lowlands, and the Sherpa Culture Museum and Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre on the ridge above explain the people and the mountains.
Trekkers usually spend two nights here to acclimatise, walking up to the Everest View Hotel, Khumjung or Khunde for a first sight of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
