Thame
A peaceful Sherpa village west of Namche where Tenzing Norgay grew up, with a cliff-side monastery that hosts Mani Rimdu in spring.
Thame lies on the old trade route towards the Nangpa La and Tibet, a day's easy walk from Namche along the Bhote Koshi. Tenzing Norgay spent his childhood here, and the village has produced many of the best-known Everest Sherpas.
Thame Gompa, built against the cliff above the village, is one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu. Its Mani Rimdu festival is held in May. The valley is also the start of the Renjo La crossing to Gokyo.
