Nuwakot Durbar
Prithvi Narayan Shah's seven-storey fortress palace above the Trishuli, from where he planned the conquest of Kathmandu.
Nuwakot was captured by Prithvi Narayan Shah in 1744 and became his base for the long campaign against the valley kingdoms; he died here in 1775. The Saat Tale Durbar, a seven-storey tower palace in Newar style, stands on a ridge with a commanding view of the Trishuli and Tadi valleys.
The palace complex, with the Bhairav and Taleju temples, was damaged in 2015 and has been restored. Nearby Bidur and Battar are the modern towns, and a few boutique heritage hotels make it a pleasant overnight trip from Kathmandu.
