Sauraha grew from a Tharu village into Chitwan's main tourist hub, with lodges from simple to luxurious lined up along the Rapti river across from the park. Rhinos sometimes wander into town at dusk.
The Tharu, the indigenous people of the Terai, have lived with malaria and the forest for centuries. Visit a Tharu village and museum, and watch the evening cultural shows with the energetic stick dance. Community forests nearby also offer good wildlife walks outside the park.
